Zora Neale Hurston (7 January 1891, Notasalga, Alabama – 28 January 1960, Fort Pierce, Florida) was an African American writer (the author of four novels and fifty published short stories), anthropologist and folklorist, most famous as the author of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937). She is also known for her participation in so-called Harlem Renaissance movement.

Fifth daughter in the family of a Baptist priest and schoolteacher, in 1927, Zora Neale Hurston graduated from Barnard College in New York with a degree in anthropology and was the only black student in her college, majoring in African-American folklore and Haitian voodoo.

In 1926, shortly after graduating, Zora Neale Hurston participated in the renaissance cultural movement, which originated in Harlem and took part in the creation of the literary magazine Fire! alongside Wallace Thurman and Langston Hughes.

In her writings, Hurston used her knowledge of ethnography to illustrate the Afro-American folklore in her book Mules and Men (1935) as well as in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. In 1937, she received an opportunity to go to Haiti to study the local culture.
